The Peugeot 308 Cabriolet is a compact convertible with a hard roof that can be folded into the boot. The roof is operated by an electronic control and when it is down and folded away the car looks very stylish indeed.
There is room for four adults with limited space in the rear and Peugeot has included lots of equipment as standard. Due to the weight of the roof system the car does not handle as well as the hatchback version and engines require harder work.
The extra weight makes all the engines feel a little underpowered and Peugeot has put the emphasis on a comfortable cruiser rather than a thrilling ride. The 308 CC has a decent grip when rounding corners and braking is excellent. The diesel option is smooth, quiet and economical to run.
Peugeot has made the 308 CC with a stiffer body shell and this results in a few rattles when the top is down, but when the roof is up it is quiet and gives a very comfortable ride. The soft suspension makes it excellent for long distances. Euro NCAP awarded the 308 CC a full five stars for safety with features such as pop up roll bars, ISOFIX child seat mounts and six airbags. There is also electronic stability control and overall the car has a quality build.
When the roof is up, the boot is quite spacious and has 465 litres of space but with the roof down this is reduced to 266 litres. Unloading and loading is also difficult due to the narrow opening underneath the roof mechanism. The electronic roof takes just 20 seconds to stow away. There are three trims for the 308; the Sport, the SE and the GT. Standard equipment includes air con, a radio and CD player and alloys.
The SE trim also has climate and cruise control as well as auto headlights and wipers. The top of the range GT model offers leather seating, parking sensors and a tyre pressure warning system. If you are looking for economy, the 1.6 litre HDi returns 60 mpg and only emits 116g/km of CO2 which means a yearly road tax of only £30.
