If you are new to the game of golf or are just starting out, you may easily get confused about the different types of wedges that experienced players use and talk about. Before you can start using the wedges, you should know about these golf clubs and for what purpose they are used. There are four different types of wedges and each wedge provides a different degree of loft. This is the main feature that differentiates the wedges from one another. In this article, we tell you about the four different types of golf wedges:
Pitching Wedge
The pitching wedge can be said to be the most common type of wedge. Almost every golf club set includes a pitching wedge. It is the wedge with the least loft. The loft of a pitching wedge ranges between 44 and 49 degrees. When you want to play full shots to hit the greens, this wedge can be a good choice for the purpose. As a novice, you can use it to hit the golf ball and make it travel a distance of 110 to about 125 yards. A professional golfer may make the ball travel up to a distance of about 140 yards using this wedge.
Gap Wedge
In terms of loft, the gap wedge is just ahead of the pitching wedge and just behind the sand wedge. This means it has the second-least loft. With a loft ranging between 50 and 54 degrees, this is the wedge that is appropriate for playing fuller shots. You can play your normal swing using this wedge when you are at a distance of 80 to 110 yards from the pin. Standard golf club sets do not include gap wedges. Sand Wedge
True to the name, the sand wedge is used by golfers when they aim to hit the golf ball through sand bunkers or tall grass. With a heavy and wide design of the club head, it has a loft ranging between 54 to 58 degrees. If you want to hit a shot between 80 to 100 yards and want to get the ball into the air fast, this is the wedge you need to use. Note that sand wedges have a shorter height than the other clubs in a standard golf set. But they are not included in a standard golf club set.
Lob Wedge
The lob wedge is the latest addition to the wedge family. This wedge has the highest loft that ranges between 59 to 65 degrees. Experienced golfers often use this wedge for bunker shots and flop shots. More often than not, golfers cover about 60 to 70 yards using the lob wedge. When you want the golf ball to rise quite rapidly into the air, you can opt for this wedge. You won’t find a lob wedge included in the usual golf club sets. This means you will have to buy one separately.
