How to Solve the Last Mile Problem?

One of the most commented issues in the areas of urban planning, commuting, and livable cities, is the “last mile” problem. If this term is unfamiliar to you, here is the simplest explanation for it: The last mile is the last leg of people’s commutes or travels within the city. In this piece, you will find some ideas on how you can resolve this problem by using a transportation device such as foldable skateboard, e-bike, electric scooter, or car.

First, let me give you an example of what the “last mile” is. If you use the underground to commute to work, but the station is let’s say 1 mile away from your home, this is the “last mile” you need to deal with after or before traveling with the underground (or any other kind of public transportation). In other words, you use some means of public transportation such as bus, train, etc. and the distance you have to conquer before/after using it for your commute is the “last mile”.

Now, after we’ve made it clear what this issue is all about, let’s brainstorm about how we can deal with it. Actually, in today state of technology, there are plenty of options that can be used in combination with public transportation to commute and travel in the city. Here are my favorite solutions:

  1. Foldable skateboard (electric)

Electric foldable skateboards are the best. Click here if you want to learn more about this devices. They are easy to use, fast, fun and you can fold the device as soon as you are done using it and put it in a backpack. This makes them the number one choice when it comes to solving the “last mile”. You can bring your electric foldable skateboard with you on the bus, train, or even on the airplane. You can carry it with you practically everywhere. Not to mention the range (which usually is between 6 and 12 miles) and the top speed of up to 22 mph.

  1. E-bike

Traditional bikes have been an alternative way of commuting for many years. It is not only cheap, but it also can benefit your health. Nowadays we can use electric bicycles (e-bikes). They have a large range (somewhere between 30 and 50 miles from one battery charge). The top speed of some models is up to 30 mph. You can take your e-bike with you on the train or bus.

  1. Electric scooter

The next option is the electric scooter. It is affordable (with a starting price of $100) and fun to use. Also, there is a large variety of scooters on the market from which you can choose the one that fits your taste and needs. They come with handbrakes and handlebars, so safety is not an issue. The best ones are those that are foldable. You will be able to bring them with you everywhere you go.

  1. Car

This one is a classic choice. If those options mentioned above and walking are not an option, you can use a car. You can drive to the station and leave it on a parking lot nearby. Even though this is probably not the best choice, it can still be a solution to the “last mile” issue.

These are just a small part of the options you have when it comes to the “last mile” problem. You could always practice walking or jogging to the station. This will not only keep you healthy but will also give you the boost you need to start your day.
