If you were sat next to this airline passenger, you might understand why he was fidgeting around so much.

This Dutch traveller was caught trying to smuggle more than a dozen live hummingbirds in special pouches sewn into the inside of his underwear at Rochambeau airport in Cayenne, French Guiana.

The birds were individually wrapped in cloth and taped up to prevent them from ‘escaping’ from their sweaty travel container.

The man, who had previously been arrested for hummingbird smuggling, looked uncomfortable and was fidgeting quite a bit. French customs officers noticed the suspecious behavior and stopped him for additional questioning

What they found when they searched the man were more than a dozen live hummingbirds. Each one individually wrapped in cloth, and tucked in special pockets sewn on the inside of the man’s underwear.

Unfortunately for the birds, authorities believe that they were not sedated when they were tucked into the man’s underwear.

In his defense, that does look like a very uncomfortable underpants situation.

Lucky for these little birds, customs officials rescued them from their sweaty prison just in time.

There is no word on whether the man was charged for his unique bird smuggling attempt.

Those poor birds, I just hope that they weren’t trapped in that man’s underwear for too long. That’s some pretty terrible and unique animal cruelty.
