Anyone who has stepped foot inside an animal shelter knows that it’s one of the most dreadful places you can imagine. So, when one rich man started looking for his lost dog at a shelter near his home that was really a slaughterhouse, he decided to use all of his resources to save all of the dogs.

Meet Wang Yan, a 29-year-old former millionaire.

He’s from the Chinese provence of Jilin and used to be worth several million yuan until he decided to buy out the slaughterhouse he visited in 2012 looking for his lost pup.

“I went looking everywhere, but all to no avail,” he said in an interview with Sina News.

However, the horrible things he saw in the week he hung around hoping to find his dog stuck with him and he decided to buy the slaughterhouse and turn it into a no-kill shelter, refusing to accept monetary donations.

“I only hope that kind-hearted people will be able to donate a few supplies to help,” he said.

Obviously, these isn’t exactly a paradise for these dogs, but it’s a LOT better than the alternative.

His efforts have a huge difference in the lives of all the dogs that were at the slaughterhouse when he bought it.

At one point, the shelter had up to 1,000 dogs due to China having a pretty awful stray dog problem, according to Metro. But Yan got that number down to about 200 dogs (most of which were adopted), but it still put him back a lot of money.

His fight isn’t over though.

The district government of Shandong outlawed all dogs and made headlines when they told their residents to basically get rid of their pets or the government would take care of the job.

Keep fighting the good fight, Yan.
