Working from 9 to 5, five days a week, is quite exhausting for everyone. But that’s jut how it is. Yet apparently it has quite negative effects on people over forty.
A recent study from the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research claims that people over 40 should be working less hours per week.
In said study, researchers looked at the number of hours people worked and then their performance on various psychological tests. The tests involved levels of short-term memory and concentration.
Working around 25 hours a week was found to be helpful for psychological performance. Working more than that produced worse scores on the tests.
Obviously people over forty need to remain active, but overdoing it has negative effects on memory, attention and even thinking.
Yet retirement age seems to be going up and up. Surprisingly people who worked around 60 hours a week showed worse cognitive performance than those who didn’t work at all.
“The research looks only at over-40s, and so cannot make the claim that over-40s are different from any other workers,” said Geraint Johnes, a professor of economics at Lancaster University.
