The true meaning of selflessness
This happens in Vietnam. This man has saved the lives of more than 100 children over the last 15 years. It all began in 2001 when Tong Phuoc Phuc’s wife was pregnant. He went with her to the hospital and realized that pregnant women were entering the next room and later leaving with no belly and no baby.
A former construction worker, Tong asked if he could take the aborted children and give them a proper burial. With his savings, he bought some land in Hon Thom, a mountain in the city of Nha Trang. There,he began burying the dead babies.
lthough his wife at first thought that he was going crazy, she finally understood. He’s buried more than 10,000 babies over the years, but what he really wanted to do all along was to save them. He said his graveyard isn’t just a place for sadness, it’s a garden meant to touch women who are not completely sure about their decision.
As a consequence of this, mothers started going to Tong, asking for help.So he went from gravedigger to lifesaver by adopting countless children from these poor, burdened mothers. His idea is that once the women are in a more secure life position, the children may return to them. So the former graveyard has become a special home to more than 100 children.
Tong came up with easy-to-remember nicknames for each: All the boys are called “Vinh“ (honor), and all the girls are called “Tam” (heart). The second and third names are the mother’s name and Tong’s family name, respectively. But he treats them all like his own.
“I will continue this work till my last breath,” he said. “I hope my own kids will continue helping people when I’m gone.” As a reward for this huge task, the happiness and love of these children is all he needs.
